About the Opportunity
Marten Falls First Nation is seeking a dedicated Oji-Cree or Ojibwe/Anishinaabemowin Language Teacher to join our school in Marten Falls, ON. While Oji-Cree is preferred, candidates fluent in Ojibwe or Cree who have experience teaching Indigenous languages will also be considered.
This position offers flexibility, with a preference for an on-site role in Marten Falls. However, hybrid or remote teaching models may be considered if relocation is not possible. Remote instructors may be invited to visit the community periodically to foster deeper engagement with students.
Reporting to the School Principal, you will play a pivotal role in developing and delivering Oji-Cree language instruction to students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. You will foster a culturally rich and engaging learning environment, integrating traditional teachings and community knowledge to strengthen students’ fluency and language appreciation.
In this position, you will be primarily responsible for making language learning an immersive and interactive experience while supporting broader community language preservation efforts.
More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Teaching Oji-Cree (preferred), Ojibwe, or Cree to students across various grade levels using engaging, interactive, and culturally relevant methods
- Developing lesson plans that incorporate traditional knowledge, storytelling, and community teachings
- Creating an immersive environment that encourages daily language use and fluency development
- Collaborating with elders and knowledge keepers to integrate cultural perspectives into instruction
- Assessing student progress and adapting teaching strategies to meet individual learning needs
- Supporting school-wide and community-driven language revitalization initiatives
- Utilizing modern teaching tools and interactive strategies to enhance language learning
- Providing mentorship and support to staff and students in language development
About You
To qualify, you will ideally have certification to teach an Indigenous language. Candidates with extensive experience teaching Oji-Cree (preferred), Ojibwe (Anishinaabemowin), or Cree, even without formal certification, are also encouraged to apply.
The following skills and experience will be strong assets:
- Fluency in Oji-Cree (preferred), Ojibwe (Anishinaabemowin), or Cree
- Experience teaching language in a classroom, community setting, or mentorship role
- Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and language revitalization efforts
- Strong classroom management and ability to create immersive, interactive language lessons
- Familiarity with modern teaching tools and technology for language instruction
- Ability to collaborate with elders, knowledge keepers, and community members to enrich learning
- Enthusiasm for professional development, mentorship, and cultural programming
- Flexibility to teach on-site (preferred) or remotely with periodic community visits
